Caring for the Care Givers

Healthcare involves hospitals, clinics, dental offices, out-patient surgery centres, birthing centres, emergency medical care, home healthcare, and nursing homes. Health care practitioners include nurses, paramedics and allied health professionals.

Work in the healthcare sector is not necessarily safe or healthy. More workers are injured in the healthcare and social assistance industry sector than any other. This industry has one of the highest rates of work related injuries and illnesses. Healthcare work is not necessarily safe or healthy.  In fact, it can be quite dangerous!

LACK OF SLEEP A CRISIS IN HEALTH CARE: SLEEP DEPRIVED MEDICOS A RISK TO THEIR PATIENTS – AND TO THEMSELVES!

In his fascinating 2018 book "Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams", Harvard professor Matthew Walker has much to say about the practice of forcing medicos to work under extremely sleep-deprived conditions.

"If you are about to receive medical treatment at a hospital, you’d be well advised to ask the doctor: “How much sleep have you had in the past twenty-four hours?” The doctor’s response will determine, to a statistically provable degree, whether the treatment you receive will result in a serious medical error, or even death.

All of us know that nurses and doctors work long, consecutive hours, and none more so than doctors during their resident training years. "The exhausting residency programs, which persists in one form or another throughout most medical schools, has left countless patients hurt or dead in its wake—and likely residents, too." Healthcare workers face a number of serious work safety and health hazards. Due to the nature of the work itself, these hazards include viruses (including covid-19), bloodborne pathogens and other biological hazards, potential chemical and drug exposures, ergonomic and musculo-skeletal hazards from lifting, awkward postures and repetitive tasks (and so on).
Added to these 'physical' WHS issues, there is the impact of excessive work hours and an extraordinary prevalence of clinical depression amongst carers (doctors, nurses, emergency service and first responder personnel.
Increasingly, healthcare workers are facing extreme hazards of occupational violence and assault posed by patients (and their families) and members of the public - and disappointingly, also from within the healthcare profession.  Bullying, victimisation,  intimidation and continuous vitriolic harassment are of great concern.
OSHA Healthcare has the strategies to identify, define and tackle these work safety issues and challenges.
With over 35 years of experience providing practical assistance services to the healthcare sector (including the Austin, Freemasons, (etc) Hospitals, several Aged Care facilities, Early development Centres and government departments), we understand the problems and stand ready to assist your healthcare organisation identify and tackle these work safety issues.
